About Digby

Digby lives and works in a converted barn, 3 miles from the centre of the historic burgh of Linlithgow.  His workshop is an integral part of his home which is set above the Firth of Forth with splendid views to the Ochil Hills and Fife.

Digby’s route to working in wood was not a direct one. He spent three decades managing international businesses based in Texas, Singapore and Paris before returning to Scotland. A keen sailor he then sailed across the Atlantic using traditional celestial navigation techniques. On his return he and his wife, Margaret, converted a barn into the home in which they now live and work.

To some extent woodworking has always been with Digby. His father was a cabinet maker and he has many of his tools in use to this day in his workshop. He is largely self-taught but occasionally seeks tuition from other skilled craftsmen to improve his technique.

Digby offers a high standard of construction and a quality finish. His aim is to make highly individual and elegant pieces of woodwork. Digby’s love of sailing is clearly reflected in the “chart” boxes he makes – they are a labour of love. He takes great interest in shape, proportion and colour, as well as how the pieces will interact with light and their surroundings – above all Digby wants to create pieces that will be appreciated for their artistic attributes as well as the quality of his craftsmanship.
